W.J. Fournet Scholarship Award

The Louisiana Rural Water Association Scholarship Fund was created in 1998 in honor of
Mr. Willis Fournet. This scholarship fund was established by members of the Louisiana
Rural Water Association. The scholarship is presented to an individual who resides on a
water system that is a member of the LRWA and who are interested in pursuing a career
in the water or wastewater field. All applicants who apply for the grant will be screened by
the scholarship committee according to the office rules. If you are interested in applying

application or download it from the link below. Applications will be mailed to member
systems in December. If you do not receive your application, please call our office and an
application will be mailed or faxed to you.
W.J. Fournet was born and raised in Kinder, LA. He was a graduate of McNeese State
University. He began his career as an educator and a coach then retired from the Allen
Parish School System as an elementary school principal. Upon Mr. Fournet's retirement
in 1981 from Kinder Elementary School, which consisted of only a few days, he became
the director of Louisiana Rural Water Association. Mr. Fournet guided LRWA to its
present state, working with the Environmental Protection Agency, the Department of
Environmental Quality, the Department of Health, the Department of Natural Resources,
and state water and wastewater operators. Mr. Fournet retired from LRWA in December
1993. Mr. Fournet passed away one year later in December 1994. He will always be
remembered for his continuing education of not only children, but also his teaching and
training of water and wastewater operators across the state of Louisiana.
2012 Scholarship Application

Alexus Overton, an upcoming graduate of Delhi High School (Bayou Macon Water System, Inc) is the
recipient of the 2011 W. J. Fournet Scholarship for the northern part of Louisiana. Alexus will
graduate with a 3.55 GPA, plans to attend the University of Louisiana in Monroe and major in
Elementary Education. Alexus’ awards and achievements include being named President of the
National Honor Society and Class Vice-President. She is active both in and out of school by being a
member of the Lifesavers, FBLA, FCCLA, Literary Rally, and Relay for Life and Salvation Army along
with other clubs. To quote the one of Alexus’ teachers at Delhi High “Her academic excellence,
leadership qualities, and service to both school and community earned Alexus membership in the
prestigious National Honor Society where she serves as the president. She is highly motivated to
learn as much as she can and attain the best possible grades. Alexus is a person of high integrity
and character as well as an outstanding student”. We would like to congratulate Alexus on her many
achievements and wish her the best of luck in her endeavors!

Taylor Granger Hathaway High School

Taylor Granger is a 2011 graduate of Hathaway High School (Jeff Davis Water District #4) and the
recipient of the 2011 W.J. Fournet Scholarship for the southern part of Louisiana. Taylor will
graduate with a 4.0 GPA and plans to attend Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge and major in
Agriculture. Taylor received numerous awards including the Parish Student of the Year and Jeff
Davis Parish Honor Roll Award. He is active both in and out of school by being a member of the 4-H
Club, FFA, and Student Council; voted Jeff Davis Young Citizen of the Year semi-finalist and USA
Rice Federation – Rice Promotion Month Grand Prize Winner. Mona Miller, principal at Hathaway
High School, wrote “Taylor is a hard working leader and an articulate, mannerly gentleman
possessing a big heart and loads of energy. He is active in church and finds time to work. Taylor’s
drive to do the right thing in every situation and portrays an excellent role model for his peers.” We
would like to congratulate Taylor on his many achievements and wish him the best of luck in his
endeavors!
